We are all in Arezzo, in the rolling hills of Tuscany, setting up camp in Jessica’s home. We will spend most of the next two weeks preparing for the ONDA tour, which starts on April 14th, the same day our new album is released in Italy. We have a lot of new songs to get to know from a performance point of view, and a lot of old songs to renew, so this should be fun!

E’ quel bel giovane nella foto con me, ma di me, per sua fortuna, molto più simpatico. Perdòno! Perdòno! (va bene anche Pèrdono! Pèrdono! se riferito al signor B. e ai suoi loschi accoliti in questo periodo di elezioni). Tra l’altro, oggi ci ha richiamato per dire di quanto siano belle le riprese e di quanto stia venendo fresco e divertente il video. Spero la pensi così anche MTV: sennò almeno ci saremo divertiti (tranne me, che ero talmente stanco da vedere la Madonna della Fisarmonica che mi faceva cenno da dietro la super-cinepresa di Franz).

Ho avuto io il piacere di stabilire il contatto (artist to artist )e incontrarlo per i FF ed è stato molto divertente. Si è buttato nell’Onda con entusiasmo e impegno, ha preparato molto materiale che con Peter abbiamo poi editato prendendo il meglio (dispiaciuti di non poter usare tutto!). Lunedì 13 è venuto in studio da Moka e gli abbiamo fatto sentire Prendi con la sua voce…con le dita incrociate in attesa della sua reazione: gli è piaciuta tantissimo! saltellando per lo studio, lui con un sorriso contagioso, io probabilmente con un sorriso un po’ inebetito dall’emozione (mi sembrava di essere tornata 13enne a quando andavo in giro con la maglia “è qui la festa?”) abbiamo parlato dei FF, di Prendi, delle cornamuse e degli strumenti da dj in un clima amichevole e rilassato…bellissima serata!!

“falla girare, falla girare….”

OK, adesso possiamo svelarvi il segreto che ci teniamo da qualche settimana: Lorenzo Cherubini, in arte Jovanotti, ha deciso di partecipare al nostro album. L’idea mi è venuta quando Mc Navigator (degli Asian Dub Foundation) ha confermato che avrebbe messo una parte di rap su Prendi l’onda: naturalmente Navi rappa in inglese - con accento giamaicano - e questo a noi piaceva perché, insieme al cantato in Italiano, dava una bella idea “globalista” e di movimento. Ma allora perché non muovere ancora di più il pezzo con una specie di “duello di rapper”, in cui due Mcs, in due lingue diverse, si rispondessero? E chi è il più etno-globalista dei rappers italiani? Ma Lorenzo, è ovvio! Così, gli abbiamo proposto di partecipare: il pezzo gli è piaciuto, ci si è ritrovato e ha inciso una sua parte di rap.

Così, dopo un certosino lavoro di editing da parte di Peter (mica facile tenere il nostro cantato e ben due rapper in tre minuti e quaranta di canzone!), Lorenzo è venuto a trovarci nello studio di Moka per partecipare al mix e ha dato la sua benedizione alla nuova versione del pezzo. “Uomini migranti, corpi in movimento, prendi l’onda del cambiamento!” E noi, caro Lorenzo, prendiamo molto volentieri!

… e questo sono io con Rita Borsellino. Rita è la sorella di Paolo Borsellino, giudice ucciso dalla mafia nel 1993; è il candidato alla presidenza della Regione Sicilia per il centrosinistra. Mi ha fatto l’onore di chiedermi di scrivere un pezzo del suo programma, quello che parla di creatività e sviluppo, cosa che ho fatto.

… and this is me with Rita Borsellino. Rita is the sister of Paolo Borsellino, a judge murdered by the mafia in 1993; she is now running for president of regional government of Sicily for the center-left coalition. She did me the honour of asking me to write a piece of her program, the one dealing with creative industries and development, which I did.

Well, it took longer than expected, but in the end we were able to shoot the video of Prendi l’onda. Produced by Movida Entertainment, this was a pretty big production effort for a small band: multi-awarded photography director Franz Pagot flying out from London, 39 actors, actresses and models of all races, sizes and ages, 14 hours on the set… and a lot of makeup to conceal the black circles around our eyes (mine in particular). The idea of the video is similar to the movie The Committments, when Jimmy auditions would-be band members and really colourful and unlikely people turn up… the shooting will be covered by top Italian newsmagazine XL, but I have taken some pictures too (only a few, though… I was so tired I felt totally spaced out).

Now that the album production is officially finished, we are working on several other things. Lady Jessica and Medhin are producing the sequences for Medhin to dj the next tour; I am talking to our American label and agent, Omnium and SRO Artists, and sending out advance CDs. Valerio is apparently commissioning a remix of our single track, Prendi l’onda; and Elena is busy organizing the video. We are going to shoot it later this week.

I am off to Palermo to do some work on traditional music (emigration songs in particular) with the kids in a local high school, who have formed People’s Orchestra Rosa Parks! This is organized
by my lifelong friend Alex De Lisi.

ONDA is finally finished, ready for Italian release on April 14th.

This picture was really taken yesterday, but it deserves showing in the blog. Lady J, Peter and I had gotten at the Nautilus studio to master the single (Prendi l’onda) and the remix by Hami and Tim of Transglobal Underground. Finished at last! Then I was off to Esagono to backup the whole thing again, and Lady J and Medhin went off to a meeting with Thomas Berloffa (the cover designer) for a meeting. Here we are in front of the studio, looking exhausted but still smiling!

Peter and Jessica are here in Milan with me, just arrived with the final mix of Prendi l’onda, ready for mastering. So, tomorrow we should close the whole album.

The audio part, at least. We are still not finished with the cover! Here’s the latest proposal: the other one had too many colours, this one maybe should have one more. I like Jessica better in this picture!
