Back to the studio to finalize the mixes. I finally realized why Peter, on the phone from Germany, had been darkly muttering that “we would need every minute” of our three days of closing down mixes: some of them are not really finished, there are a lot of decisions to be made! And then when we got to the studio Peter found out that his system is more powerful than Esagono’s, so we needed an extra DSP to make run the sessions. So we were more or less in panic for most of the day. But we managed to get the extra equipment (Mario, Jessica’s father drove up from Tuscany to bring it to us! Thank you!) and now we are mixing… madly! We started from “La vien giù”, and it’s just brilliant.

It’s gonna take a lot of coffee and a lot of sleep deprivation, but WE’LL MAKE IT!

Well, after the photo session ended Andrea was left with about 700 pics to sort! So he and Medhin sat down and browsed a lot, and now it seems they have a cover proposal (two, in fact… this is my favourite one). A shame that I’m playing my guitar rather than my beloved accordion, but otherwise I quite like it!

Preparo di nuovo la valigia, ma questa volta leggera e poco ingombrante. Domani parto con Moka alle 13,30, direzione Rubiera. Passeremo a prendere Peter in aeroporto a Bologna e Moka ci lascerà entrambi all’Esagono per poi proseguire per Venezia a curare i suoni dell’ultimo di carnevale (in bocca al lupo!). Nella mia valigia non ci saranno strumenti, ma orecchie fresche e idee chiare per aiutare Peter e il mio Supersocio a chiudere i mix. Sarà un lavoro interessante, di solito è una fase che mi piace molto! E’ un po’ come ricoprire una torta di glassa…c’è una certa soddisfazione anche se bisogna fare mooolta attenzione! La ciliegina sopra alla torta sarà il mastering….forse la settimana dopo.

Abbiamo fatto delle foto bellissime!!
Lisa ha un nuovo look che le dona moltissimo…io e Manuela (Ufficio Stampa Mescal) non l’avevamo riconosciuta!
Medhin è sempre più cool e Alberto ha dovuto indossare abiti allegri e scarpe colorate (..le ha sempre odiate! ma devo dire che è stato molto disponibile e professionale!).
Per quanto mi riguarda Karin ha fatto il trucco più bello che abbia mai avuto e Rossana ha trovato un paio di idee molto carine e molto Lady J. (abbiamo utilizzato anche la mia catena portaflauto!) quindi bene! Ognuno nel suo elemento ma tutti più belli!

P.S. Mi hanno tolto i punti e il braccio va meglio…mi sento sopra ad una buona onda!

What a day. We were racing agaist time all day to get the photo session for our album cover done. Medhin, Lisa and I gathered in Andrea’s studio in Milan at 9.30 in the morning to meet up with the crew: Andrea himself, Rossana and Karin (the latter two in the picture below). Jessica, still recovering from arm surgery, showed up a little later. Mescal’s Manuela and Roberta and our friend “uncle” Michele Monina also dropped in to say hello. Andrea is accustomed to working with professional models, and so he abused us mercilessly until 8 p.m.! But it’s all good, the shots are really good and I’m sure a great cover is on its way. We can still ride the wave!

Lisa and our stylist Rossana undertake the mission impossible: make the four people in Fiamma Fumana - as diverse as they are - look like an actual band! This takes a lot of browsing…

Questa mattina stavo riflettendo sul fatto che in fondo blog significa diario, quindi racconto, cronaca, snocciolata di fatti e fattarelli più o meno interessanti che riguardano un argomento: nel nostro caso il disco nuovo dei Fiamma Fumana. Allora mi sono detta che in fondo anche il mio braccio e il bollettino medico allegato fanno parte del disco! il braccio che mi servirà a suonarlo sui palchi e quello che mi ha fatto tanto innervosire nelle ultime registrazioni, quello che manda a quel paese e che firma gli autografi (..o le fatture)!
Quindi eccovi l’aggiornamento:
-Primi 3-4 giorni post operazione non male.
- Dal 5° ricaduta secca: complicazione per infiammazione del nervo (dolore!) dovuta ad errata posizione post operatoria (suggerita dai medici).
- Dal 7° giorno Cortisone.
- 9° giorno smetto di essere ottimista: piccola crisi di tristezza…penso che dovrei essere a Milano per 3 giorni per le foto del disco e non ci riuscirò, chiedo di salire solo giovedì….
- Dal 10° giorno sto meglio e mi sveglio allegra e positiva..peccato che ho la febbre!! Mmm… e mi suggeriscono di far controllare la ferita forse è infezione. Decido di dormirci sopra una notte.
- Oggi siamo al 11° e la febbre non c’è!! Forse ci ho dormito bene sopra!! Non ho neanche grandi dolori e con un po’ di fortuna avrò un sorriso smagliante giovedì per le foto…

This is Copacabana beach in Rio de Janeiro for the Rolling Stones show. More than a million people!

We must tend to the source of that power, and let our tradition share in it, drink from it and be renewed. It is essential.

Hey, Andrea, Medhin, everyone! I got an idea for the cover!

In fact this is a Reuters photo, taken yesterday in San Sebastiàn, in Northern Spain, so I guess we can’t use it. But the concept is there: “If you can’t ride wave, then you’re gonna go unda”!

Well, recording is over - or nearly so. While Peter mixes and we try to work out the artwork for the cover, I’m getting worried that the live show maintains the same high quality standards as the album. I’d better practice! Especially with the guitar, with the accordion it’s generally going to be easier. So I sit in my room and play along…
